Cool shows this week: Dirty Little Heaters and more!

My friend Jessica's birthday is this week, and the main thing she wanted was a weekend of awesome rock. Well, Jess, you got your wish.

Thursday night starts off heavy at the Pour House with Black Skies, Colossus, Lo-Pan and Gollum. Two doors down at Tir na Nog, Free Electric State, Veelee and Red Leader. Free Electric State was one of David Menconi's Great 8 bands for 2010, so they are definitely worth checking out. Besides, who can beat a free show?

Equally rockin' but in a bluegrass way is Old Habits, who will be at Hibernian earlier in the evening. Finally, over in Chapel Hill, Dirty Little Heaters (above) will be tearing it up at Nighlight.

DLH will have the big show of the week on Friday with their CD-release show at the Pour House. Too bad yours truly will be at the beach, but you should go. The Loaners, The Moaners (who don't play out enough) and Big Death Scene are also on the bill. Around the block, Gray Young, Jason Kutchma, Solar Powered Sun Destroyer, Finn Riggins will be at Slim's. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will be at the Lincoln Theatre. In Chapel Hill my new favorite band, Max Indian, will be with the almost-as-awesome Light Pines and Ryan Gustafson at Local 506.

Finally, Static Minds will be at the Berkeley on Saturday.  And to come full circle, Black Skies will also play with Death Came Down The Mountain, Skull Buckle and Wilmington vets Rural Swine on Saturday at Local 506. Lets hope Rural Swine plays their classic "3-D Chow Box" about Wilmington's famous greasy spoon.
