New music Tuesday: Trouble and Zodiac,

The latest from classic Chicago doom outfit Trouble has been getting mostly good reviews, with the general consensus being that new vocalist Kyle Thomas (Exhorder, Alabama Thunderpussy) was a fitting addition. Invisible Oranges is streaming three tracks, all of which I love. Check it out here. The album is out now on FRW Records.

German blues-rockers Zodiac are currently recording their second album and preparing to go on tour with Monster Magnet this fall (note the Dec. 7 stop in Charlotte). Here's a very short teaser video for the upcoming album.  If you like Kadavar, Graveyard or Witchcraft, you should be into this band.

Cvlt Nation also streaming Greensboro's Mourning Cloak

I admit to knowing nothing about this band until today -- despite the fact that they're from Greensboro. But once I saw the Cvlt Nation post, and saw where they're from, I decided to check out Mourning Cloak. The entire "No Visible Light" EP is streaming now, and it's, good crushing stuff. Check it out here. It'll be released on cassette on Headfirst! Records next month. Hoping they'll play Raleigh soon.

Windhand releases teaser for new album, 'Soma'

Richmond classic-doom dealers Windhand have released a short teaser for their upcoming album, "Soma," out Sept. 17 on Relapse. I truly can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to this one. In other big Windhand news, it was announced today that they and Inter Arma will be playing Roadburn 2014.

New Horseback streaming on Cvlt Nation

Chapel Hill's Horseback will release a three-CD (and digital) collection of rarities, singles and unreleased material titled A Plague of Knowing on Relapse on Aug. 20. According to Relapse, The first pressing of A Plague of Knowing is limited to 2000 copies and will be housed in a deluxe three disc digi-wallet together with a Horseback sticker. Pre-Orders are currently available via Relapse Mailorder here with digital pre-orders available via Bandcamp here.

Cvlt Nation is currently streaming "On the Eclipse," which would sound great in a movie about the Manson Family murders.

THE MIDNIGHT GHOST TRAIN To release ‘Live At Roadburn 2013′ this September

From our friends at Roadburn: Midnight Ghost Train, whom I last saw at Dive Bar last August, plan to release their 2013 Roadburn set this September. Here's more from Roadburn and the band:

'We are very very happy and proud to announce that we will be releasing our “Live From Roadburn 2013” This september on Vinyl and CD on ROADBURN RECORDS, these guys are the king record label of heavy music in europe and we are very excited to work with them. It will be distributed all through europe and when the time comes you will beable to buy this awesome live record on Roadburn Records website, or at our live show. Our european tour this september and october will be our first tour with this release, It was already going to be an awesome tour but now its just gotten a lot heavier. So for all you european fans you will have first dibs on this release. This record reflects our live show perfectly, its dirty, its heavy and its full of soul. With lots of songs that have never been released on any of our previous records, including a cover by Left Lane Cruiser.’

We of course are honored to work with this ‘hardest working band in showbusiness! Later this week we’ll post a first teaser of what the album will sound like.

USX, Generation of Vipers to embark on short SE tour

USX, which has now officially changed its name from US Christmas, has been a little quiet lately. Their last album, the expansive, one-song "The Valley Path," was released in 2011 (it was one of my favorites that year). Front man Nate Hall spent most of 2012 recording and supporting his exceptional solo album "A Great River," and other band members devoted a little time to side projects of their own.

This week the Southeast will see a burst of energy from the band as they tour with related band Generation of Vipers. The Friday show in Atlanta will be especially good with openers Sons of Tonatiuh and Across Tundras

USX Tour w/ Generation Of Vipers:
7/17/2013 The Boiler Room – Asheville, NC
7/18/2013 Flicker – Athens, GA
7/19/2013 529 – Altanta, GA w/ Sons of Tonatiuh, Across Tundras
7/20/2013 The Jinx – Savannah, GA 7/21/2013 Jakes – Columbia, SC

Cauldron and Volture at Maywood

(Volture)

(Volture)

(Cauldron)

(Cauldron)

Last was the first time I'd seen Richmond NWOBHM lovers Volture in a while -- and it just happened to be their second show with a brand new lead singer, Jack Bauer. I was a fan before, but the new singer seriously has taken them to a new level, and I loved the new stuff that they played. You can hear a new song with Jack here. They'll be at the Gwar-b-cue if you're thinking of making that trip.

I was eager to see Toronto trad-metalers Cauldron live. I honestly wasn't into their latest album, and I thought they just might be a band that would work much better live than on record. I was not disappointed at all. They sounded great, and I'm eager to hear what they do next. Here's video (not by me) of "All or Nothing." See more photos

It was also my first trip to the Maywood. For those of you who haven't been there since the switch from Volume 11, the former stage area is now a pool room, and the stage is now in the same room as the bar.  It's a much smaller space, and very reminiscent of the Dive Bar -- which makes sense because Robby from the Dive Bar is now involved with Maywood. I thought the space worked well, but I can see how it will get really crowded when a larger band plays.
