For fans of Gerty and the Butchies

Check out The Ex-Members, featuring members of both bands. Kim Gray shot the video on Nov. 18 at Duke Coffeehouse. She's co-manager -- along with band member Melissa York -- of 307 Knox Records out of Durham. CORRECTION: From Kim Gray: Actually, I am the partner in 307 Knox records. Melissa Thomas is the founder of 307 Knox Records. Melissa York is drummer for The Ex-Members and the former drummer from the Butchies. I do not believe they have an acutal manager. Basically, there are alot of Melissa's in Durham!

Odds and ends

It's been a crazy couple of weeks for me, but I did manage to see a couple of shows. The first was by a pretty good band called the Crap Rock All-Stars, about whom I know nothing, except that they're from Greensboro. They were at Slim's on Friday, March 9.

Here's their video:

Last night I checked out the awesome Unknown Hinson at The Hideaway. I didn't know much about him either, but a co-worker raved so much about him I thought I'd check him out. I'm glad I did. This show also reinforced my opinion that the Hideaway is currently the best place in Raleigh to see a show. It's roomy, the sound is good, they've got a good beer selection, and if you get hungry during the show you can get a nice plate of ribs. And usually the shows start a little early, which actually wasn't so good for me last night because I'm still on Raleigh hipster time and missed part of the show. Here's Unknown Hinson's video:

Good times at Kings

All, here's the first installment in the Kings remembrances. I'm going to just keep adding stories to this post and put a permanent link to the post in my navigation bar. Please send me your stories and photos! SEE ALL THE PHOTOS HERE Check out Abby's photos from Kings. __________________________________________________________________ Okay, okay, you can laugh at me all you want. I realize how narcissistic I'm being here. But it's the only time I've ever felt like a rock star and one of the only good picutures of me rocking out. This was taken by Jay Winfrey, August 20, 2004 (is that right?) during the Thin Lizzy tribute. It would be me rockin' out to "Bad Reputation" or "Waitin' For An Alibi"...maybe. One of my favorite other King's memories was when Olympus Mons did Circle Jerks for the cover up years ago. And everyone was on the floor "playing" like it was the pit. I remember Dave Meuller getting off the stage and jumping into that crowd and, in total hardcore character, just knocking the shit out of a few people. Will Erikson comes to mind, flailing across a floor covered in beer and glass. Oh, seeing DMBQ from Japan, just months before that horrible wreck, WOULD absolutely be a highlight!!! That would be the best band I ever saw there. Ever. Scott Phillips and Aimee Argot doing the Love Hangover in 2005 is another. Greg and I couldn't believe we were in the a rock band with THAT GUY! Need Kings pics/rememberances

All,
I'm planning a project to commemorate Kings closing in April and I need your help. Right now I plan for this to go on my personal blog, but there's a chance parts of it (the more tamer parts) could end up at newsobserver.com.

Please feel free to repost or pass this along to any Kings fans who aren't on myspace.

I'm looking for people to send in their favorite pictures from Kings. This can be pictures of bands, pictures of you and your friends hanging out, or pictures of the club itself. I'm going to make a Flickr set under my account and make all these pictures PUBLIC. That means, if you want to send a photos of yourself passed out in the ladies room, that's OK with me -- just know that everyone will see it.

Here's what I need with your pics:
* Photographer's name (I will not post anonymous pics)
* Who/what is in the picture (band names, etc.)
* Date it was taken (approximate is OK)
* A description of what's happening in the picture.

ALSO: I would like to collect "rememberances" from Kings regulars about the club. What will you miss most about it? Make sure you send your name (again, I will not post anonymous stories, though if you want to protect the names of the guilty in your stories, that's OK. I just need to know who the writer is).

Please send all this to mannsworld@gmail.com. I am hoping to get something online by late March, but I will keep updating it as long as people keep sending me stuff.

Thanks!
