After telling everyone to go see Righteous Fool, and interviewing Mike Dean for New Raleigh, I ended up not seeing the band because I'd forgotten I had a 7:15 a.m. appointment the next morning. Earlier in the evening I thought I actually would get a chance to see them, because someone in the know insisted that the first band would be playing at 9 sharp. Turns out that person was just plain wrong. So, I saw The Ghost of Saturday Nite and Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls, but not the band I came to see. But the folks who were there (and the show was strangely undercrowded) that I had MISSED IT, and the show was amazing. Damn.


At least I got to ride in the "I Gotcha" cab, which has been prowling the streets of downtown for a few months now. If you haven't seen it, and I hadn't until that night, it's a macked-out mini van with lights, comfy bench seating, and bongos, cowbells and tambourines for passengers to play. The driver blasts classic rock like Kansas and Styx and sings along loudly, and very out of tune, over a loud speaker. Look for him tonight at 2:30 when it's time to make your way home and you know you shouldn't drive.

Tonight in Raleigh: Two things for you to do

First off, there's the Dirty Little Heaters and Suburban Sweethearts at Slim's. This is a benefit for Cy, and is also an EARLY show. So don't stroll in at 11:30 and get mad because you've missed most of the show. You've been warned. From Suburban Sweethearts: I know it's a Sunday night and all, but that's all the more reason to squeeze one more rockin' evening into your weekend...

Tonight we'll be playing with the fantastic Dirty Little Heaters, and we'll also have donations for Cy Rawls and selling "I Heart Cy" shirts. All of this money goes directly to Cy and his family....

This is an EARLY show!! The Dirty Little Heaters will be starting at 9:30 sharp!

C'mon out, childrens!! Let's have some good times and show some love for Cy...

 The second thing is Man Will Destroy Himself and Richard Bacchus at White Collar Crime. Somehow, the idea of MWDH playing White Collar Crime really tickles me. This show is FREE and starts at 10 p.m.! I suggest you do the downtown stumble and walk back and forth between shows. From MWDH: 21+ only, but yep, it's free. you can't beat that.

Tuesday's big show at Slim's was Charleston, S.C., cock-rockers Leslie, who were just as loud and rockin' as when they came through last year. Check out the video for "Devil Ain't Ready."  Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls opened up, but this time they had a special guest, Reese McHenry of the Dirty Little Heaters, who played second guitar on "Degenerated" as Ricky mugged for my camera.

Back in the saddle: Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls

First off, let me apologize for being lazy the past couple of weeks. Just after Memorial Day I came down with a summer cold that really put me out of commission for a few days. Then, I spent this past weekend at the beach, where I think I finally burned the cold out of me by laying on an incredibly hot beach for a few hours. I'm feeling better now, and will be back out and about taking photos and videos. I got back to Raleigh yesterday in time to catch Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls at Slim's during their celebration for the new Yak Productions "Terrible Love" video. But my timing was all wrong -- I decided to meet up with a friend at the Landmark, and missed the showing of the video itself. Oh well, here's MY video of them playing that song last night.

(Jesse Malin) Thursday night I was torn between going to see Jesse Malin along with his former D-Generation bandmate Richard Bacchus at Slim's, and Team Robespierre at Downtown Events Center. The choice was between New York gutter punk at one club and New York synth-punk at another. Well, I decided to try and walk back and forth between both clubs, which basically means I walked around a lot and only saw bits and pieces of each show. I didn't catch the end-of-set collaboration between Jesse and Richard's band, but I've been told it was fabulous. Jedidiah from the blog New Raleigh was at the Team Robespierre show, and he got some nice photos. Check them out here.

Jesse Malin show moved to Slim's

If you bought tickets to see Jesse Malin, along with Richard Bacchus, at Blend on Thursday night, the show has been moved to Slim's. All previously purchased tickets will be honored. Tickets at Slim's will be $10.

We need extras to come out and help us on Feb 3rd which I know is Super Bowl Sunday but we will be done before that starts. We need people to show up at Slim's Downtown on 227 S. Wilmington St. Raleigh at 10:00am Sunday morning wearing buisness class/buisness casual. The idea of the scene is to try and make the shot look as though it's a buisness weekday in downtown.

The birth of Yerrypalooza

OK, so last night's post and myspace bulletin about my dream line-up wasn't entirely accurate, but it also wasn't a joke. It turns out that Richard Bacchus and The Bleeding Hearts were both supposed to practice last night. Over dinner, members of both bands and of The T's decided to just practice at Slim's. Unfortunately not everyone in The T's or Suburban Sweethearts could actually make it to such a last-minute show. That ended up being OK, because Richard Bacchus and The Bleeding Hearts both played, and various members guest-starred in each other's bands. Totally low-key, even though a surprising number of people made it out. It really was pretty much like hanging out at someone's house, drinking beer and watching their band practice. That's a good thing. At some point someone started calling the event Yerrypalooza in honor of Bleeding Hearts guitarist Joe Yerry. Maybe that means it'll be an ongoing event. Cartridge Family CD-release

I've been enjoying The Cartridge Family's "Shine Like a Bottle" for a while now. Now the band will have their official CD-release party tomorrow night at Sadlack's. In case you're not aware, shows at Sad's are typically early (7:30-ish), which means you can head down to Slim's afterward to see Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls. Check out "So Much", which is my favorite song off of "Shine Like a Bottle".

Round up: Four bands, two clubs, one Raleigh block

Last night I started off at The Pour House, where The Loners were playing with The Heavy Pets and Adult Film Makers. AFM have been around for years, and include two members of one of my long-time favorite bands The Bad Checks, and yet I had never seen them. Their bass player was unable to be at the show, so this isn't entirely representative of their sound, but they still managed to rock. Adult Film Makers A couple of doors down at Tir na nOg, Richard Bacchus and the Luckiest Girls were putting on a free show sponsored by WKNC. I swear, I can't figure out how Richard doesn't roast in that buttoned-up jean jacket he always wears. Here's their video. After Richard Bacchus, I headed back to the Pour House and caught The Heavy Pets very last song. My camera memory died at this point, which was too bad because I decided to go around the block to Slim's to see a Charleston, S.C., band called Leslie, rather than stick around for The Loners. These guys were strutting, bombastic blues rock, the type of band that hollers out "ALRIGHT" and "CAN YOU FEEL IT RALEIGH????" after every song. I think they really should be seen to be believed, but unfortunately you'll just have to take my word for it. Finally, I had no idea Uncle Kracker was even in town!

You know, I didn't think I'd find a club in this town that has worse lighting for shooting bands than Slim's, but, lo and behold, White Collar Crime surpasses them. To be fair, WCC isn't normally a band club, it's a watering hole, and a pretty nice one at that. The bartender was very friendly, the living-room-type set-up was comfortable, and the torch-lit patio was nice and moody. Plus, their shows are free. And I know the real issue is my equipment. It's hard to believe I've been shooting shows around here for more than two years with the same little Nikon Coolpix, which doesn't even have a manual setting. Once I get my upcoming trip out of the way, I'm going to start saving up for something nicer. So, basically that's a long-winded way of saying that these pictures and movies suck. Richard Bacchus (pictured top; formerly of DGeneration) was great in a drunk-bar-rock-meets-snotty-old-school-punk kind of way. The T's (Lutie is pictured above)were just plain great. I talked to a co-worker who was there and we agreed that the only description you can give to them is "rock 'n' roll." They're not this kind of rock, or that kind of rock. They're just rock 'n' roll.
