This week's cool shows: Annuals, Screaming Females and more!

LOTS going on this week, including Annuals, who will be at the Pour House on Friday in support of their upcoming "Sweet Sister" EP, which will be out in late March on Banter Records. Will we hear some new stuff at the show? Probably, but you can also hear some new stuff right now by going to Stereogum and checking out "Loxstep." Gray Young and Bright Young Things are opening this show, so don't miss it! Also, that lovely photo above is by Autum de Wilde.

Also on my personal radar is Screaming Females, who aren't local, but rock like you wouldn't believe! I love a girl who can wail on the guitar and sing her ass off. Check out "I do" and I think you'll agree. They'll be at Duke Coffeehouse on Saturday.

"I Do" by Screaming Females

Also that same night, Dirty Little Heaters -- fronted by another woman who can wail on the guitar and sing her ass off -- will have their CD-release party at Local 506 with Red Collar and Pink Flag!

New music from Dirty Little Heaters!

Check it out: Durham's DLH will release their latest CD, "Champions
of Imperfection" through Churchkey Records on Feb. 22, but you can hear the album's second track, "City Square" right here! The heaters will play their CD-release show Feb. 20 at Local 506 with Red Collar, Pink Flag, and Magician Michael Casey. I didn't make that last part up.

Video of Dirty Little Heaters at Tir na Nog

Caught part of Dirty Little Heaters at Tir na Nog on Thursday. I liked the keyboard player, and thought they gave them an bit of a Deep Purple sound, which is always nice. Not sure if he's a permanent addition. Check out the video.

Thanks to Dirty Little Heaters and Sir Arthur!

(Dirty Little Heaters) Thanks so much to everyone who came out to Slim's last night to help me celebrate my birthday! I had a blast, and I was so excited to introduce Dirty Little Heaters and Sir Arthur & the Royal Knights to several of my friends who hadn't seen them before. Both bands totally rocked, but Sir Arthur in particular were tighter than I'd ever seen them before. They need to wear those ruffled shirts at every show!

Sunday night videos

Sunday was the type of evening typical in Raleigh rock. Either there's nothing going on, or there are at least two great shows happening at once. Luckily Sunday's shows were staggered, which allowed me to catch Dirty Little Heaters at Slim's, Man Will Destroy Himself at White Collar Crime, and Suburban Sweethearts back at Slim's. The video of Dirty Little Heaters really doesn't do them justice, so I'll leave that off. Here's video of Man Will Destroy Himself (which is really dark) and, below that, Suburban Sweethearts.

Tonight in Raleigh: Two things for you to do

First off, there's the Dirty Little Heaters and Suburban Sweethearts at Slim's. This is a benefit for Cy, and is also an EARLY show. So don't stroll in at 11:30 and get mad because you've missed most of the show. You've been warned. From Suburban Sweethearts: I know it's a Sunday night and all, but that's all the more reason to squeeze one more rockin' evening into your weekend...

Tonight we'll be playing with the fantastic Dirty Little Heaters, and we'll also have donations for Cy Rawls and selling "I Heart Cy" shirts. All of this money goes directly to Cy and his family....

This is an EARLY show!! The Dirty Little Heaters will be starting at 9:30 sharp!

C'mon out, childrens!! Let's have some good times and show some love for Cy...

The second thing is Man Will Destroy Himself and Richard Bacchus at White Collar Crime. Somehow, the idea of MWDH playing White Collar Crime really tickles me. This show is FREE and starts at 10 p.m.! I suggest you do the downtown stumble and walk back and forth between shows. From MWDH: 21+ only, but yep, it's free. you can't beat that.

The power of a REALLY angry woman

Gentlemen, I would advise you never to get on Reese McHenry's bad side. To do so will basically invite her to basically tear you a new one in song. The last time I saw The Dirty Little Heaters, it was McHenry on vocals and guitar, and another woman on drums -- and that was during a Carolina Rollergirls bout back when they still were at the roller rink. Now the band is a three piece with Rob Walsh of the Spinns on bass and Dave Perry of Jett Rink on drums. The beefed up sound really works to support McHenry's powerful voice. Imagine if PJ Harvey -- at her most pissed off -- sang like Janis Joplin and fronted The Donnas. When McHenry screams out "don't tell me to fucking chill!" I imagine the object of her rage holding onto a chair for dear life and saying, "OK baby, I'm wrong! For whatever it was I did, I'm wrong!" Here are a couple of videos from their show Thursday at Tir na Nog. The second one was actually the first song of the set. I tried to be lazy and just lean against the stone wall, but too many people started standing in front of me, so I ended up moving -- while still shooting -- to the front of the stage. They'll be at Slim's on Aug. 10 with Suburban Sweethearts.
