Flute Flies raise awareness for CyTunes, Tisch Brain Tumor Center

The Flute Flies, the local music supergroup featuring Ivan Howard from the Rosebuds and GAYNGS, Reid Johnson from Schooner and Zeno Gill from Pound of Miracles, have a beautiful, lush new album out called "Yes Means Maybe."

The band released the album in order to raise awareness for CyTunes.org, the local-music download site that's dedicated to the memory or Rosebuds friend and music fanatic Cy Rawls, who passed away after a battle with brain cancer in 2008. The album is available on the Flute Flies Bandcamp site using the pay-what-you-want feature. All proceeds will go to CyTunes, and then be donated to the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, where Cy was treated.

The Rosebuds release two exclusive tracks through Hopscotch

The Rosebuds from tim lytvinenko on Vimeo.

Check it out: The Rosebuds have released two exclusive tracks, "Secret Life of the Rosebuds" and an AWESOME cover of "Stayin' Alive," through Hopscotch. Both tracks have been released before, and are part of the band's plan to release one archival track a week through various outlets through the rest of the year. This is in anticipation of their fifth studio album, which will be released early next year. Check out the tracks on the Hopscotch page, and see the video for "Secret Life of Rosebuds." I just wish they'd done a "Saturday Night Fever" parody, with Ivan struttin down Hargett Street, for "Stayin' Alive."

Review of the Rosebuds last night at Jackpot

Courtesy of Triangle Music. Check it out here. I've always wondered why they don't have more bands at the Jackpot. Not that they should turn into a full-scale rock club (I don't think people would want to give up the dance floor), but something like this once a month or so would be really cool.

Video from last night's Rosebuds show

Yes, Slim's was packed for last night's last-minute Rosebuds show, though not as packed as I assumed it would be. Since I haven't heard the new CD, I can't tell you what new songs they played. I was in the back of the club for most of the show because I just can't stand being in a crush of people in a small club. I did manage to get up front to capture "Get Up, Get Out," and as you can see from the video, I was practically onstage with the band. In fact, I was worried a couple of times that the bass player was going to accidentally whack me with his headstock! My favorite part of this video is when Kelly goes out into the crowd. I'm not sure who I like more: The dude with the amazing stache in the front row, or the dude with the cigarette hanging out of his mouth just clapping away to the song.

The show didn't start getting crowded until after opening band The Shame Club (from St. Louis) played, which actually IS a shame because they were great -- though probably not exactly what many Rosebuds fans would have been into. Ricky Bacchus compared them to BTO, with a bit of Queen thrown in. I thought they sounded a lot like the Hellacopters, which is one of my all-time favorite bands. I hope they swing back through here again.

The Rosebuds TONIGHT at Slim's

OK, this one slipped up on me a little too quickly to get into the weekly update (or, once again, maybe I'm too late with the weekly update). But this is, by far, the show of the week.

The Rosebuds, tonight (Oct. 22) at Slim's, $5. Get there early because it will be packed.

Free Rosebuds remix!

Here's the press release from Merge:

The Rosebuds
released a "dark, sexy, danceable" record entitled Night of the Furies in the spring of 2007. Thursday, April 10, marks the one-year anniversary of the release of that record.

Night of the Furies contains songs of despair and loss that roused the musical friends of Ivan and Kelly to present them with personal reconstructions of these dark tales. The resulting assortment of dance tunes and lullabies delighted the pair and inspired them to release Sweet Beats, Troubled Sleep (Night of the Furies Remixed) in the Merge store as a free download.

Remixers include Roger O'Donnell (The Cure, The Psychedelic Furs), Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Mac McCaughan (Portastatic), and other wonderfully mysterious gentlemen.

Download the whole album here, and get your copy of Night of the Furies here. Here is the Bon Iver remix as a little preview!

The Rosebuds will be on tour with British Sea Power beginning on May 1. Full list of dates here.
