Suppressive Fire and Noctomb photos and video

Suppressive Fire has released a killer new album of Teutonic-style thrash, which I reviewed for Metal Bandcamp. They held an album release party on Jan. 14, 2017 at the Maywood with a selection of openers from across the metal spectrum, including sludgy doom (Raleigh's Noctomb), black metal (Greensboro's Dreaded) and straight-up death metal (Richmond's Deathcrown). Check out the videos below.

Photos and video from Noctomb and Chateau

Chateau

Noctomb

I was able to catch two promising local bands -- Noctomb and Chateau -- Wednesday, Dec. 23, at  Slim's. Basura was also on the bill, but they were already on when we arrived, and I didn't get anything from them. Chateau has been consistently described to me as black metal, and while I do hear a lot of black metal in their music, I think that's a limiting term for them. They describe themselves as "black metal with rock 'n' roll influences," which I think it pretty accurate. Check out the videos below and judge for yourself. See more photos here.

Walpyrgus at Kings

I took a lot of photos of Raleigh's Walpyrgus last night (Feb. 28) at Kings, but this iPhone shot best encapsulates what the band is all about. These dudes play old school, traditional metal with a heavy Thin Lizzy influence. Lead singer Jonny Aune has some serious pipes and a dramatic flair as well. Glad to finally get to see them. See more photos here

I'm also glad to find out that the iPhone 6's video capabilities are actually really good. I spent the majority of last year trying out, and being disappointed with, various camera options. Looks like the phone is my best option because that's what I used to shoot the video below. Was even able to edit on the phone itself.

Viva La Venus and Tinfoil Fuse at Volume 11

(Video removed)
I wasn't familiar with Tinfoil Fuse, who opened last night's show at Volume 11 Tavern, but was pleasantly surprised. I thought their vocalist had good metal chops -- could scream and growl with ease.

Viva La Venus played their second to last show with Mary Anne as the bass player. I'm not sure why the lighting was so much better in their set than Tinfoil Fuse's. Automag closed the show, but it's been a long week for me, so I took off early.

If you want to know why I love The Trousers so much ...

Check out this video from Friday night's show at Slim's:

The Trousers from Mann's World on Vimeo.

I just like this band more and more each time I see them, which isn't nearly often enough. I got couple of OK photos too.

This second photo is funny because it looks almost like Russ is on stage with them, which wouldn't be unusual considering Russ is in every other band in town.

The Loners were great as usual. I swear, I think they're the most popular band in town now because every time I see them, the place is packed with rabid fans. It was cool to see Eddie quoted in the N&O the other day too.

Dexter Romweber and Robbie Fulks

Thursday I was able to catch the first set by Dexter Romweber, who played solo at Sadlack's. Dexter is truly one of this area's legends. I've long said that Jack White ripped off at least part of his schtick from Dexter. I prefer him in a duo, because then he really gets crazy, but solo is good too. Here's the video.

Dexter started at 7, which allowed me to run over to the Hideaway and catch a packed show by Robbie Fulks. I'd never seen Robbie before, and honestly I think he's a bit too much of a novelty singer for me. But he is a damn fine player. When he just simply played, he was awesome. I couldn't get any photos in the Hideaway, but I did get two videos, including one of Robbie and Terry Anderson.
