The Trousers completely rocked Slim's last night, despite having issues with Jim's chord, and Joey breaking a bass string. And, yes, I know I'm a total geek, but I just loved it when Jim threw in a riff from "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago" into the middle of one of their songs. It wasn't the song that I recorded, though. Still waiting on word from the band as to what the title of this one is.
(the Trousers) I missed Thursday's big free concert downtown because, well, I just didn't feel like going. No other excuse. Just didn't feel like it. the surprising thing was that, according to the reports I've gotten back, the show was kind of sparsely attended. I did end up going to The Pour House to see one of my favorite local bands, The Trousers, who only play a couple of times a year. There weren't many people at that show either, and when I slipped over to Tir na Nog to check out Regina Hexaphone, THAT show was less-than-crowded too.
What was up? Usually Thursday nights are fairly rockin' in Raleigh. I guess everyone was resting up for today's Puddle of Mudd show. I'm only halfway joking about that. I went down there today to see a friend who was working, and the place was INSANE. That was easily the most crowded of any of the downtown live events I've been to this year. Keep in mind, I haven't actually seen any of the headliners. I usually just go to see the local bands, then leave.
But, back to Thursday. The Trousers were awesome, as were Red Collar. Left Outlet sounded good. They have kind of swirly dark psychedelic sound, similar to what Strange was doing a few years ago, but their guitar player's onstage antics are so goofy that they're distracting. I just like this band more and more each time I see them, which isn't nearly often enough. I got couple of OK photos too.
This second photo is funny because it looks almost like Russ is on stage with them, which wouldn't be unusual considering Russ is in every other band in town.
The Loners were great as usual. I swear, I think they're the most popular band in town now because every time I see them, the place is packed with rabid fans. It was cool to see Eddie quoted in the N&O the other day too.
I only saw the last two bands at last night's benefit for Chris Plankers at Kings. I've seen The Trousers before, and they again impressed me with their laid-back take on English blues. Jim Pendergrast plays guitar like he's just walking or breathing -- completely effortless and natural. Here's a video from them.
The last band was The Bleeding Hearts (Myspace), a great straight-up rock band that reminds me of Raleigh's late, great Finger. Here's a clip by them.
