Lindsay Lohan, meet the Bleeding Hearts

In the almost-too-weird-to-believe category, Norwegian newspaper Aftonbladet has issued a call for Lindsay Lohan to cover the Bleeding Hearts' "Rehab Girl," which has enjoyed considerable success since getting big-upped by Little Stephen. At least, I think that's what this article says -- that's what Joe Yerry says it says. But since I don't read Norwegian, and I don't think Joe does either, I decided to consult the Google translator. I don't think it reads Norwegian either. From what I gather, the Aftonbladet folks really dig the CD's album cover, which isn't surprising seeing as the band couldn't keep their promo posters, featuring semi-naked local model Luva, from being stolen.

Review of the new Bleeding Hearts CD!

Raleigh's Bleeding Hearts may have been "Stayin' After Class" on their debut CD, but their newest release finds them graduated and all grown up to a more mature, but still rockin', sound. That's not to say they've abandoned their angst-ridden, 70's style riff rock, with hooks so big you want to hold up your Pabst Blue Ribbon and scream "hell yeah" from the very first note. Musically "Nothin' On but the Radio," would fit right into any music collection where "Cheap Trick at Budokan," "KISS Alive" "Highway to Hell" are favored discs. Listen carefully and you'll hear a little .38 Special sneak into guitarist Joe Yerry's riffage. And you'll definitely hear plenty of musical references to North Carolina's own semi-forgotten '70s pop-rock geniuses Nantucket. But while the debut spent a lot of lyrical time dwelling on the good times and excitement of youth, the latest CD explores what happens the morning after, when the party's over, you're all alone and the good time girl who broke your heart is headed off to rehab. On "In a bad place," singer-guitarist Sam Madison sings about wanting so bad to work it out but his lover can't because she's "in a bad place right now." When he gets the ultimate "I love you like a brother" rejection" on "It Hurts," all he can do is scream the title over and over again until his voice is raw, like a kid who just can't believe he's not going to get what he wants. Maybe The Bleeding Hearts' Young, Loud and Snotty attitude hasn't grown up that much after all!

Last night The Bleeding Hearts played their CD, "Stayin' After Class," plus a few new songs, straight through at Slim's. I'm looking forward to their next one. Here's video of "Pretty Enough." Check out the accidental mood lighting in the middle of the song.

The birth of Yerrypalooza

OK, so last night's post and myspace bulletin about my dream line-up wasn't entirely accurate, but it also wasn't a joke. It turns out that Richard Bacchus and The Bleeding Hearts were both supposed to practice last night. Over dinner, members of both bands and of The T's decided to just practice at Slim's. Unfortunately not everyone in The T's or Suburban Sweethearts could actually make it to such a last-minute show. That ended up being OK, because Richard Bacchus and The Bleeding Hearts both played, and various members guest-starred in each other's bands. Totally low-key, even though a surprising number of people made it out. It really was pretty much like hanging out at someone's house, drinking beer and watching their band practice. That's a good thing. At some point someone started calling the event Yerrypalooza in honor of Bleeding Hearts guitarist Joe Yerry. Maybe that means it'll be an ongoing event. Seriously, it's like someone read my mind and put together my dream show. This is not a joke.

The Bleeding Hearts and The Trousers at Kings

I only saw the last two bands at last night's benefit for Chris Plankers at Kings. I've seen The Trousers before, and they again impressed me with their laid-back take on English blues. Jim Pendergrast plays guitar like he's just walking or breathing -- completely effortless and natural. Here's a video from them.

The last band was The Bleeding Hearts (Myspace), a great straight-up rock band that reminds me of Raleigh's late, great Finger. Here's a clip by them.
